Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana (PMUY), an ambitious scheme of NDA government has achieved a new milestone. Launched on 1st May 2016, the number of free LPG connections distributed under the scheme has crossed 1 Crore mark.
The scheme was launched on 1st May 2016 from Balia in Uttar Pradesh to distribute free LPG connections to women belonging to BPL households across the country. Under the scheme, the central government aims to distribute about 5 Crore LPG connections to make the rural households smoke free by the end of year 2018-19.
The central government is offering a financial assistance of Rs. 1600 per gas connection with a total budget of Rs. 8000 Crores for 5 Crore connections. Out of the all connections distributed till now, Uttar Pradesh has received the most. Below is the state wise list of number of connections released.

Free connections under Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana are being given only to the women head of the household. The selection of the beneficiaries under the scheme is being done on the basis of SECC-2011 data. The beneficiaries are also being provided the facility to buy cooking gas and next refill an paying the amount through monthly installments.
