About 14.13 lakh BPL families have received the free LPG connections under the flagship scheme Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana of Narendra Modi Government. The scheme for LPG connection distribution to BPL families is currently under operation in 487 districts of 17 states.
Launched on 1st May, under the Ujjwala Yojana, the central government is providing free LPG connections to the women belonging to the BPL families in the country. A especially low priced stove is also available for purchase under the scheme.
The selection of beneficiaries for Ujjwala Yojana is being done on the basis of SECC-2011 data available with the OMC’s. The beneficiaries also being provided with on option to pay in EMI the cost of the stove and first refill.

The connections under the scheme are being released to the eligible beneficiaries by the Government run Oil Marketing Companies such as Indian Oil while the scheme is being supervised by the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas.
Under the scheme, central government aims to provide LPG connections to 5 Crore BPL families by the end of financial year 2018-19. The total budget for the scheme is Rs. 8000 Crores.
