Meghalya Health Insurance Scheme (MHIS), originally launched in December 2012 in association with ICICI Lombard is all set to enter 3rd Phase in April 2017. The 3rd phase of the scheme will offer new facilities along with a wider coverage of population in the state. The state government is planning to start the implementation of third phase of Megha Health Insurance Scheme in April 2017.

The state government would open technical bids for the scheme on 11 January while the financial bids would be invited a couple of days later from the insurance companies.

At present, Megha Health Insurance Scheme is covering about 50% of the state population while under the third phase it is expected to increase significantly. The scheme has been termed as Universal Health Insurance Scheme, but, according to the Chairman of Public Accounts Committee, Paul Lyngdoh, the scheme covers only 50% of the state population, hence it can not be termed as Universal.
