Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana, a flagship scheme of central government has been launched in the state of Assam. Under the scheme, the central government would provide free LPG connections for BPL families across the state. The free LPG connections would be provided to the women head of the BPL family.
The selection of beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana is being done on the basis of Socio-Economic Census Data – 2011. The scheme would provide a financial assistance of Rs. 1600 per BPL household for providing LPG connection. The scheme also provides EMI facility to pay the cost of first refill and the purchase of gas stove.
Launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 1st May 2016, the scheme is aimed at providing clean fuel to the BPL households and improve the health of women. PM Ujjwala Yojana would cover about 30 Lakh BPL households in the state within next two years and procedure for selection for beneficiaries has been fast-tracked to ensure benefits to reach the poor at the earliest.
The launch of Ujjwala Yojana has been delayed in Assam owing to some technical problems. The absence of Aadhar Cards was one of the major problems for linking the beneficiaries with the scheme.
Under the Pradhan Mantri Ujjwala Yojana the central government would provide 5 Crore LPG connections at a total budget of Rs. 8000 Crore in next 3 years. 2 Crore connections have already been distributed under the scheme across the country.
