Puducherry (UT) to launch Housing Scheme worth Rs. 172 Crore for Poor People

Puducherry government is going to launch a new Housing Scheme for poorer sections in Union Territory. This scheme will ensure that all the people who belongs to economically weaker sections and are deprived of basic housing facilities will now be given their own houses. UT govt. will implement this Housing Scheme with a total outlay of Rs. 172 crore which will be given by the central government.

Pondy Housing Board will be hugely benefited from this special package as the financial condition of the board was not well. It was suffering from huge price deficit and thus was unable to meet its financial commitments.

Modi govt. has allocated this amount for the UT to ensure its objective of Housing for All by 2022.

This information is provided by Minister of Health and Tourism Malladi Krishna Rao while Replying to a debate on issue of demand for grants for housing and other departments in the Assembly. He says that “Central govt. has earmarked Rs. 172 crore for the Union Territory”. While giving details on various proposals of Housing department, he said “It is for the first time that such a huge amount is being allocated for Housing Scheme in Pondy”.

Previously, govt. has made various efforts to provide grants to Housing Board for its financial commitments but failed everytime. This was due to interference of the Lt. Governor who did not clears the file sent to her office. UT govt. was planning to dispose some properties of the Housing Board to meet its commitments.

Puducherry Govt. Reduces Property Tax

MLAs of the UT had made a plea to review the tax structure. So, UT govt. replies that the property tax will be reduced by 25 per cent. Welfare Minister M Kandasamy also informs that UT govt. has also banned plastic products below 50 microns.

Govt. will now focus on increasing usage of alternative materials which are degradable. These materials would be produced by the Self Help Groups (SHGs) to make UT plastic free.

Other Major Announcements in Pondicherry Assembly

Pondy CM also informs that the UT govt. has provided a golden chariot of worth Rs. 4.76 crore for the famous shrine of Dharbaraneyeswara temple. This temple has separate shrine for Lord Saneeswara, in Tirunallar in Karaikal region.

Department of Hindu Religious Institutions will soon document their historical and cultural features. This dept. has a total number of 243 temples under its control. Later, the house passed by voice-vote funds for PWD and Animal Husbandry departments among others.
