Swayam Free Online Course Scheme & 32 Swayam DTH Channels Launched

SWAYAM or Study Webs of Active – Learning for Young Aspiring Minds is a new initiative by the ministry of human resource development. Under the Swayam scheme, the central government would provide free online courses to students across the country. Swayam free online course scheme is designed to achieve the three cardinal principles of Education Policy viz., access, equity and quality.

Under the Swayam scheme, professors of government institutions like IITs, IIMs, central universities will offer free online courses to all students. Here student can choose every course that is taught at the university / college / school level and these shall be offered by best of the teachers in India. Under the Swayam scheme, all courses would be offered free of cost.

Swayam Free Online Course Scheme – Objective

The main objective of the scheme is to take the advantage the best teaching & learning resources to all student including students from backward societies and economically weaker sections. Swayam scheme seeks to cover the students who have till now remained untouched by the digital revolution and have not been able to gain the knowledge.

Swayam free online course scheme would be implemented through the IT platform that provide all the courses online, which are taught in classrooms from 9th class till post-graduation to be accessed by anyone, anywhere at any time. Digital technology enables good teachers to directly teach large number of students who are not physically present in classes. Online courses offer an interactive learning experience through which students in remote parts of the country can benefit from the teachers.

Swayam Scheme – 4 Parts

(1) Video lecture
(2) Specially prepared reading material that can be downloaded/printed
(3) Self-assessment tests through tests and quizzes and
(4) An online discussion forum for clearing the doubts

Through Swayam scheme the ministry has proposed to provide high quality e-content to all colleges and universities free of cost. The platform will host over 2,000 courses for up to 3 crore students across the country. Government has launched 32 channels under this scheme that provide all related knowledge. The SWAYAM Prabha channels are available for free for anyone who has a set top box to receive either DD Free Dish or DishTV. These channels transmit 4 hours of fresh content every day, and contain lectures from the best teachers in the Country.
